The Benefits Of A Morning Routine!
“Routines are like punctuation marks, without them, each day is like a run-on sentence.”
We have all heard that the morning sets the tone. However, you would be surprised at how many people say that they don’t have enough time or they are just to tired to have a routine? Take the time to think about what is your routine? How is it helpful? If you were to start one, what would you want to be apart of your routine?
If you are sitting here reading this and thinking “I don’t even think about what I do every morning”, then I urge you to keep reading!
“Smile in the mirror. Do that every morning and you’ll start to see a big difference in your life.”
- Yoko Ono
Living Intentionally
Chances are that you already have some sort of morning routine like hitting snooze on your alarm, rolling out of bed, and brushing your teeth. The differences is deciding to do these things with intention and presence. When thinking about some of the things you do in the morning, do you see any room for self-improvement? For setting intentions or setting yourself up for a meaningful day? What part of that routine mentioned above sets you up for that type of day?
This is where the importance of setting a morning routine and setting intentions for your day becomes so important. By setting a morning routine and factoring in the areas of your life you want to improve – you put your best foot forward.
Starting Your Morning Routine
It can be hard to know where to start if you have never considered a morning routine. Luckily for you, there are plenty of resources out there to help you create a routine that will work for you. One of the best ways to start is by imagining you woke up next morning and a miracle happened -all your worries and problems lifted. What would be the first small signed that let you know that this miracle happened? what would you be doing differently than you weren’t doing before? Take a moment to think about it…
Now, outlines some of the things that come to mind. If your having trouble thinking of things, here are five themes you can do to set a routine, and start improving your day:
Observe Silence: Take some time in the morning to think about what you want out of life and what you want to improve. You can do this through prayer, meditation, or simply by sitting still and breathing. It’s up to you.
Reading: Use this time to read a chapter of a book you’ve always wanted to read, a self-improvement book, or something that is simply for pleasure. If a chapter is to much, start with 5 pages!
Affirmations: Empower yourself! You are worth it! You will get in shape! You will have a great day! You will exceed at work!
Journal: Take this time to write down your goals or simply reflect. How can you know how much you have improved if you can’t even remember where you started?
Make breakfast or your favorite drink: In many ways, making a cup of coffee, matcha, or smoothie can make us be present - be in the moment. Take the time and enjoy the process of grinding coffee beans and notice the wonderful aromas in the air. Acknowledge your first sip or bite!
Remember to start small. Some find it helpful to pick one new thing and build from there. What’s cool about some of these things is that they can be done in conjunction with other things. For example, you can observe silence and reflect while brushing your teeth. Here’s a tip: it’s easier to start a new habit if you’re connecting it with a previous one ;).
